Why incorporate scent?
The possibilities for incorporating scents are endless. Incorporating scent into an existing product can increase the product’s exclusivity. Scent can be used as an appetite suppressant or enhancer as well as an alertness or relaxation tool. Scent can even be used as an authenticity signature.
What scent can be added?
The range of scents to incorporate has virtually no limit. Rotuba works with Givaudan, internationally renowned for its expertise in fragrances. Givaudan has over 33,000 different scents to choose from, and you can even work with our partner to create your own scent.
Can the level of scent vary to specification?
Yes, scent loading can range from subtle to intense. It’s customized to consumer need and desire.
How does color matching effect scent recognition?
An important aspect of scent recognition is its relationship with color - a strawberry scent in a purple color would elicit the wrong message. In our color lab we develop custom colors to match any color tone or hue.
Is it hazardous if it comes into contact with eyes or tear ducts?
Cellulose Acetate is the preferred material for eyeglass and sunglass frames, and they go through complete life cycle testing. These products come in contact with the skin, and are in close proximity to the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, and are regarded as safe when they are made without fragrance. Fragrances are also manufactured under stringent international standards, but Rotuba recommendsagainst using fragranced plastics in close proximity to the eyes as a conservative safety measure.
Is the final product poisonous?
The material is definitely not poisonous, although Rotuba obviously does not recommend products be ingested. Givaudan can make its fragrances with GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) components.
Does the odor rub off on hands?
Yes. However, it is only a mild transfer to the skin and washes off with soap and water.
How does temperature affect the scent?
Heat activation definitely enhances the emission of the fragrance, and prolonged exposure at extreme temperatures can dissipate it. Cold temperature does not completely inhibit the materials ability to emit fragrance, especially if the loading and fragrance type are tailored to a cold temperature end use.
What happens in water? What will happen if Auracell goes in the pool/ocean?
All three of the materials that make up the Cellulosics family-Cellulose Acetate (CA), Cellulose Acetate Propionate (CAP), and Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB)-absorb some water. Cellulose Acetate can absorb as much as three times what CAB and CAP can absorb. So, particularly thin parts or trim in CA may warp and distort. Harder, stiffer versions of CAB or CAP have the heat resistance to be considered for something that could be washed periodically. All three materials can be fine for occasional pool or ocean use.
If the scented plastic was a trim on clothing, could the garment go into the dryer? To retain the scent in clothing applications, clothing needs be either hand washed or run in cold water in a washing machine. Clothing needs to be air dried—not run in a dryer.
